Deuteronomy

There are many good commentaries on Deuteronomy. From a critical perspective Weinfeld is difficult to beat, though Nelson, Tigay, and von Rad are quite good in their own right (Christensen is a bit idiosyncratic). Pastors will gain much by looking at Biddle, Brueggemann, Cairns, Sherwood, as well as the volume by McConville in the new evangelical “Apollos OT Commentary” series. Perhaps for sentimental reasons, I have to recommend the late Peter Craigie‘s work. Craigie, a Canadian scholar, argues that the book of Deuteronomy is organized to mimic an ANE treaty form. On the popular side, Wright, Thompson, and Maxwell (in that order) are all good.
