Hosea

The book of Hosea stands first among the minor prophets. Most of the book is made up of speeches critiquing the religious and political life of the Northern kingdom of Israel before their destruction in 722 BCE. There are a number of excellent commentaries on Hosea. The top critical commentary is the commentary by Macintosh. This volume meets the high standards for the ICC series. Other good critical commentaries include Anderson and Freedman, Mays and Wolff. Landy offers some more literary reflections on Hosea. From a pastoral perspective Limburg is excellent, as is Sweeney and Stuart. Achtemeier is excellent, other good popular commentaries include Craigie, Hubbard, and Smith.
